Boko Haram Releases 21 Chibok Girls: Notorious Islamic group Boko Haram handed over 21 of the over 200 schoolgirls abducted in Chibok to the Nigerian government on Thursday morning, Sahara Reporters, BBC and CNN have said.

The online media houses said a top government official, who declined to be named, informed them of the release.

In an exclusive report by Sahara Reporters – also confirmed by the BBC and CNN – the government official informed that the girls were picked up by a military helicopter after their release.

“I can confirm to you that there is a major activity going on in the Banki axis. For now, that is what I can tell you,” the source said.

The federal government also confirmed the release in a series of tweets on Twitter.

It is confirmed that 21 of the missing Chibok Girls have been released and are in the custody of the Department of State Services, DSS.

Mallam Garba Shehu, spokesman for the Nigerian President, said the girls are in the custody of the Directorate of Social Services.

The Director-General, Malam LAWAL Daura just finished briefing the President H.E MUHAMMADU Buhari.

Malam LAWAL wants the girls to have some rest, with all of them very tired coming out of the process before he hands them over to the VP.

The release of the 21 girls comes as President Buhari prepares to embark on a three-day trip to Germany to discuss assistance for the rebuilding of the northeastern part of Nigeria ravaged by Boko Haram.

The President takes off shortly on a trip to Germany for a state visit.

Dozens are still missing, and their whereabouts remain a mystery, but are believed to be somewhere in the forest.
