#Scam: All The Details About The #SaveMayowa Campaign

By  |

About a week ago, the story of a young lady named Mayowa Ahmed and her plea for help took over the internet.

According to the people behind her plea, hash-tagged SaveMayowa, she was suffering from cancer, and needed 32 million Naira for surgery that would save her.

In a very rare show of support, Nigerians all around the world rallied for Mayowa, and in less than 4 days, over N40 million was raised for her. People eagerly waited for her to begin treatment and return to her normal life. These people were dealt a severe blow on Thursday morning when a report surfaced that the money they had contributed was not going to be used for any treatment.

According to the report, doctors at the Lagos University Teaching Hospital where Mayowa was being treated had told the family that her cancer, a stage 4 Ovarian cancer could no longer be treated, and that her case was now terminal. The doctors reportedly also deny recommending that she be transferred to a foreign hospital.

Various bits of information have surfaced on social media, including this correspondence reportedly between her brother and the Emory hospital in Atlanta, Georgia.

Also, a stage IV Ovarian Cancer is not exactly a death sentence. According to Cancer.org, there is a 17% survival rate for stage IV invasive epithelial ovarian cancers.

The integrity of the Lagos University Teaching Hospital has also been called into question, with many accusing the hospital’s staff of nonchalance and giving chance for the possibility of a wrong diagnosis.

Either ways, as long as Mayowa Ahmed is still alive, we don’t believe it’s a scam. As long as there’s life, there’s hope.
