It was learnt that the victim who came from Edo State went to the FMC to treat malaria fever only to discover after a blood test that the victim had contacted the deadly disease.
In an attempt to curtail the spread of the disease the state government transferred the victim back to Edo State where he came from – in what it described as a proactive measure.
The State Commissioner for Health, Dr Dayo Adeyanju, who confirmed the case, said that the surveillance and containment machinery of government had been stepped up to prevent a spread of the disease.
He made this disclosure known at a briefing of newsmen after a meeting with senior health officials and development partners on the way forward in the lassa fever case.
“This strategy has paid off which is why the confirmed case and the two suspected cases were detected on time and the patients transferred to the Irrua Specialist Teaching Hospital in Edo State for treatment”, he said.
He continued: “It is expected, we have already said it, that is why we are proactive about it to ensure that if anybody has symptom and sign of Lassa fever, we will be able to quickly detect and then curtail it.
“Also, there would be active surveillance, where we look around to see if anybody has been infected. Already contact tracing has begun on this one.”
