Micheal Phelps will be competing in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. Atleast that’s what Ryan Lochte thinks.

Lochte is Phelp’s strongest rival.

“I guarantee he will be there,” Lochte said. “I think so. I really think so. So Michael, I’ll see you in Tokyo.”

Phelps has two events left in the final swimming competition of 100-meter butterfly, Friday, and medley relay on Saturday.

While Phelps has hinted this is his last Olympic appearance, his fellow American swimmer Lochte, however, told NBC’s TODAY Show, Friday, August 12, his next two races are just competitions where “Phelps seeks to add to his record 22-gold medal” adding that it may not be the record-breaker’s last.

This is Lochte’s  fourth appearance at the Olympic Games. It’s Phelps’ sixth time competing.

Phelps’ longtime coach Bob Bowman reaffirmed his student’s lack of intent to make it back to the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.

“I just don’t see it happening,” Bowman said. “He’s in such a good place personally. He doesn’t need it.”

Phelps’ mother, Debbie, sounded witty when asked about how she felt about her son competing in his sixth Olympics. She replied with, “That would be wonderful. I already have the race picked out.”

Presently, Micheal Phelps is the highest record holder with 22 gold medals and 26 medals in total.

He earned his last two in the 200-meter individual medley final on Thursday, August 11.

After the 2012 London Olympics, Phelps had announced he was retiring and Lochte said Ohelps would come back. Two years later in 2014, Phelps announced he was competing for the 2016 Rio Games.

Lochte disclosed to The Telegraph at the time, “I think he will come back. He’s still young. I think he will be back for Rio. We’ll see, he’ll miss the sport.”

And he was right. If Phelps decides to compete in the next Olympics, he’d be 35 years old and one of the oldest competitors. His age didn’t stop him from beating his competitors who were younger than him this time so we doubt it’d bother him at the next Olympics.
