The photograph of the rescued boy which was released by Syrian opposition activists in the aftermath of a devastating airstrike in Aleppo, shared an illustrative symbol of Syrian war.
The picture of the young lad sitting in an ambulance, covered head to toe with dust and so disoriented as to seem barely aware of an open wound on his forehead, has been shared thousands of times on social media.
Confirming his identity, a doctor in Aleppo on Thursday said the 5-year-old boy goes by the name Omran Daqneesh.
Doctor Osama Abu al-Ezz also confirmed he was brought to the hospital known as “M10” Wednesday night following an airstrike on the rebel-held neighborhood of Qaterji with head wounds, but no brain injury, and was later discharged.
The startling image is a screenshot from a video shot and circulated by the Aleppo Media Centre from inside the Syrian province. The anti-government activist group has been contacted to confirm details about when and where the footage was shot.
The group posted the clip to YouTube late on Wednesday local time, reportedly shortly after Omran was injured.
The strike occurred during the sunset call to prayer, around 7:20 p.m, said Raslan, a correspondent for Al Jazeera Mubashir.
Omran was rescued along with his three siblings, ages 1, 6, and 11, and his mother and father from the rubble of their partially destroyed apartment building, according to Raslan. None sustained major injuries, but the building collapsed shortly after the family was rescued.
“We sent the younger children immediately to the ambulance, but the 11-year-old girl waited for her mother to be rescued. Her ankle was pinned beneath the rubble,” Raslan said.
