These Healthy Foods You Can Buy for Cheap at the Dollar Store Will Make You Rethink Everything

By  |

Whether it’s the Dollar Tree or Dollar General you frequent, you know you will find the bargain of a lifetime. They sell greeting cards, toys for the kids, and seasonal decorations no one really needs. But here’s another thing they provide: food. You may not find organic produce at the dollar store anytime soon, but don’t disregard those snack aisles just yet — there are actually some pretty nutritious choices. Here are the healthy foods you need to start buying at the bargain giant.

1. Pistachios

You know by now you should be adding more nuts and seeds into your diet, and pistachios are a great way to start. They contain plenty of vitamin B6, which is vital for brain health, and they may even help with weight management and longevity. And while they contain lots of satiating protein, pistachios are also relatively low in calories and fat compared to other nuts.

Don’t love pistachios? That’s fine — the dollar store has plenty of other nut options that’ll do the trick.

2. Salt-free seasonings

Seasoning isn’t just awesome for your taste buds — some spices have serious health benefits. And if you’re watching your sodium intake for optimal heart health, the dollar store provides salt-free seasonings to suit your needs. As for other spices you should try, Eat This, Not That! says you should go for cinnamon for balancing your blood sugar, and turmeric for its anti-inflammatory benefits. And you won’t be spending a fortune on these items, either, as they’re all only a dollar per unit.

This food has been the center of a lot of health-related controversy over the years. But here’s the truth about apple cider vinegar: It really can be beneficial for your skin, digestive system, and immune system. Taking just one tablespoon of it diluted in water a day may also help to lower your cholesterol and blood pressure, too.

While apple cider vinegar that contains the “mother,” or the floating unrefined beneficial bacteria, is considered the healthiest, you can still find some version of this product at the dollar store. Sounds like a steal to us.

4. Canned fish

We bet you didn’t know you could find canned salmon and tuna at the dollar store, but you can. And don’t scoff at the idea of buying fish from this bargain store just yet. Consumer Reports reminds us canned fish has plenty of health benefits, as it’s a great source of protein, and salmon has tons of heart-healthy omega-3 fatty acids. And most canned salmon is wild caught, which contains less mercury than farmed.

5. Tomato juice

If you need an excuse to drink more bloody Mary’s, the dollar store has you covered by supplying tomato juice. And whether you’re a fan of the famous alcoholic beverage or not, you should really start drinking more of this beverage. TIME says tomato juice has plenty of lycopene, which is a powerful antioxidant that can help prevent strokes and cancer. It does have a lot of sodium, though, so be wary if high blood pressure is a health concern of yours.

The dollar store breakfast food aisle is littered with sugary cereals, but there is one gem that shines amongst it all: the oats. This quick-cooking grain contains tons of filling fiber, and it even has some protein to keep you satiated all morning. And that’s not all — oats also contain plenty of minerals and anti-inflammatory benefits that are great for your heart.

Not only will you reap the benefits of the lycopene in the crushed tomatoes, but the other peppers, onions, and spices offer a range of vitamins and minerals.
