Prevent The Growth Of Fibroids: With the advancement in medical technology, more modern ways of diagnosing and curing ailments are now available. But there appears to be a better way of approaching and solving medical challenges including fibroid and endometriosis and that way is through diet.

Fibroids and endometriosis impact a lot of Nigerian Women negatively and have become a major source of concern because they not only trigger pain but are also responsible for a high number of fertility problems.

Fibroids are benign tumors that grow in the uterus and endometriosis occurs when uterine lining cells grow outside the uterus. Fibroids are noncancerous tumors that develop within the uterus. The are not the same as cancerous tumour growths.

Often times, fibroids occur during the middle to late childbearing years while there have also been cases in those in their early childbearing years. Obese women and Black women are genetically more predisposed to having fibroids. Women who are approaching menopause are also at the greatest risk for fibroids because of their long exposure to high levels of the oestrogen hormone. Some unconfirmed statistics say that four out of every 10 Nigerian women have fibroids growth but very few are aware they have this condition.

Symptoms
Fibroids usually don’t show any symptoms but some women may experience pain as the tumours grow bigger. Despite the asymptomatic nature of fibroids, they are a major concern because they have the ability to hinder fertility.

The symptoms that may however show that you’re predisposed to fibroids include Heavy or prolonged menstrual bleeding lasting for up to seven days, pain or pressure in and around the pelvic area, pain during intercourse and frequent urination. Other symptoms include Backache or leg pains, a firm mass, often located near the middle of the pelvis (which can be felt by the physician) constipation and Difficulty emptying your bladder.

Presently, the cure for fibroids include Hysterectomy (removal through surgery), anti hormonal agents, Uterine artery embolization and anti-inflammatory pain killers.

Foods To Avoid If You Have Uterine Fibroids

Fibroids can also be treated through natural methods by ensuring you manage your diet and nutrition properly. Here are some foods to avoid if you’ve been diagnosed of endometriosis or fibroids.

Red Meat
Red meat is any meat that has more myoglobin than white meat and examples including beef and some types of pork. White meat on the other hand is non-dark meat which can be obtained from chicken (excluding leg or thigh), or fish.

Women with fibroids growth should stay away from red meat from mammals and ducks. This is because red meat is a rich source of protein which can add to an increase in certain hormones such as oestrogen. Lean white meat should be consumed as an alternative protein source.

Caffeine
The first thing that comes to mind when people here about caffeine is coffee, but not only coffee contains caffeine. If you’ve been diagnosed with uterine fibroids, you may need to stay away from anything containing caffeine including caffeinated soft drinks, tea and chocolate.
Researchers from the Atlanta Clinic of Preventative Medicine warns people with uterine fibroids against drinking caffeinated beverages due to their high level of methylanthins which, in turn, cause a high level of biochemicals in the body that can form tumours.

Saturated Fats
Quite a number of foods contain saturated fats and most depends on how they are processed. Common examples of food containing saturated fats include egg yolk, sausage, avocado and fast foods.
Saturated fats tend to raise the levels of oestrogen which allows fibroids to grow. More so, saturated fats stress the liver making it difficult for the body to break down and get rid of excess hormones.

Whole milk, Cream and Butter
These dairy foods are rich in fat. are high-fat dairy foods. Whole milk, in contrast to skimmed milk, is milk which has not had its fat removed. Cream and butter are also derived from milk and they also have the ability to increase the oestrogen hormone.

Refined Grains
It is essential for women who are predisposed to endometriosis and uterine fibroids to stay off refined grains and instead eat whole grains. Whole grains include brown rice, millet and oats, all of which are high in B vitamins that help to process oestrogen.
