The 7 Worst Frozen Foods You Should Never Buy

By  |

While there are some foods you should keep stocked in your freezer, the majority of frozen food products are hardly healthy. Even when certain packaging makes reduced-fat or low-carb claims, the reality is, most frozen foods have been processed in some way before hitting the shelves. Hiding behind that clever packaging and those frost-covered doors just may be the most unhealthy meal on your list. The next time you’re at the grocery store, don’t be duped. From frozen apps to single-serving dinners, here are seven of the worst frozen foods you should never buy.

1. Hungry-Man Classic Fried Chicken

With a name like Hungry-Man, it’s no surprise this frozen meal aims at leaving you stuffed. The brand doesn’t pretend to stray from hefty portions, nor does its packaging have you believing it’s a healthy option. The biggest hook on the label is undoubtedly the 39 grams of protein the Classic Fried Chicken meal delivers. Unfortunately, Business Insider reports the meal, which includes breaded chicken, mashed potatoes, corn, and a brownie, has 970 calories. It’s also packed with sodium and saturated fat. Unless you’re suffering from malnutrition, it’s best to steer clear of this one.

2. Totino’s Pizza Rolls

This General Mills brand is undoubtedly best known for its pizza rolls, and the Triple Pepperoni variety boasts the highest calorie count. With 230 calories per serving, it may not seem all that bad, but the very nature of these addicting little cheese-filled snacks makes it all too difficult to stop at the suggested six pizza rolls. Couple their addicting quality with the fact that most are sold in bags of 40, and it’s likely you’ll surpass that serving in no time.

3. Stouffer’s Fettuccini Alfredo

Just because you get a single serving of your favorite pasta doesn’t mean it’s any better for you than what you’d otherwise have. Stouffer’s Fettuccini Alfredo is no different. If you’re someone who craves a rich and creamy bowl of pasta from time to time, there are better options than this. At 630 calories and 840 milligrams of sodium per single serving, there’s no denying this meal isn’t doing anything for your overall health. Besides, it might not even leave you feeling satisfied with little more than fat and starch.

4. Jimmy Dean Meat Lover’s Breakfast Bowl

It doesn’t come as too much of a surprise that the brand known for lots of butter, meat, and carbs made our list. A hearty breakfast indeed, Jimmy Dean’s Meat Lover’s Breakfast Bowl combines eggs, potatoes, sausage, cheese, and bacon, delivering you a one-way ticket to a heart-unhealthy start to your day. The 24 grams of protein sounds good, but 460 calories, 1,130 milligrams of sodium, and 265 milligrams of cholesterol sure don’t.

5. Marie Callender’s Pot Pie

Grabbing a couple boxes of pot pies sure is tempting, especially if you’re craving some warm comfort food. Some nights just call for a no-fuss, no-prep dinner, but the Cheesy Chicken & Bacon Pot Pie from Marie Callender delivers more than just home cooking with a side of comfort. Buried beneath that flaky pie crust lies 510 calories, 14 grams of saturated fat, and 720 milligrams of sodium.

6. Boston Market Sweet & Sour Chicken

Some would argue Boston Market knows how to do comfort food right. And when it comes to their line of frozen grocery store products, they stay true to those less-than-healthy roots. In particular, the nutritional value, or lack thereof, in each Sweet & Sour Chicken frozen dinner gives you all the more reason to swap this out for something you can make yourself.

Each meal packs 580 calories and 1,710 milligrams of sodium. And don’t forget about the 34 grams of sugar, either. The American Heart Association recommends a daily sugar allowance of 36 grams for men and 24 grams for women. You’re better off just grabbing a candy bar at the check-out aisle.

7. Nestlé Toll House Chocolate Chip Cookie Sandwich

If you’re someone who can’t say no to an after-dinner treat, never, ever toss Nestlé’s Chocolate Chip Cookie Sandwich into your cart. Vanilla ice cream stuffed between two jumbo, soft, chocolate chip cookies? Sign me up. But really, don’t. With 380 calories and 34 grams of sugar, you’ll want to ditch this dessert.
