Reports in German outlet, Bild have it that the Red Devils have set their sights on signing the Greek defender this summer, but will have to beat the likes of Chelsea and Arsenal to the signature.

It is understood that Papastathopoulos is keen on leaving the Westfaldion this summer after another solid season in the Bundesliga and will consider a move to the Premier League.

It is claimed that both United and Chelsea are tracking the Greek defender and sent scouts to watch him in Dortmund’s DFB-Pokal Cup victory at the end of the season.

As yet, though, United have not made an official offer for Sokratis, though if they do he may come at a reasonable price given that he only has two years remaining on his current contract.

The Portuguese coach was often critical of his defensive options last season, slamming Phil Jones and Chris Smalling for their lengthy – and in his opinion exaggerated – injury lay-offs.

gling for fitness throughout the season and Marcos Rojo unlikely to be fit for the start of the new campaign, Mourinho may be in the market for a second centre-back this summer.
