The Barcelona star failed to make the top three for the Best Player in Europe accolade in favor of the Real Madrid duo and the Atletico goal scorer striker.

Messi, who won the award last year, was placed on number 5 in the list of 10 candidates – a spot below his Barcelona team-mate Luis Suarez who was placed on number 4.

Others on the list are:

4 Luis Suárez (Barcelona & Uruguay) – 29 points
5 Lionel Messi (Barcelona & Argentina) – 25
6 Gianluigi Buffon (Juventus & Italy) – 19
7 Pepe (Real Madrid & Portugal) – 9
8 Manuel Neuer (Bayern München & Germany) – 6
9 Toni Kroos (Real Madrid & Germany) – 5
10 Thomas Müller (Bayern München & Germany) – 2

Ronaldo is favorite for the award, having led Real Madrid to their 11th Champions League win in 2015-16, before being crowned European champion with Portugal after seeing off France in the final at Euro 2016.

On the other hand, Bale, also won the Champions League with Madrid, while inspiring Wales to the semi-finals at the European Championship.

France striker Griezmann lost the Champions League final with Atletico, and was also on the losing side to Ronaldo at the Euros, although he was crowned top scorer with six goals.

As usual, journalists from each of UEFA’s 55 member associations provided an initial list of their five best-ranked players, with the first receiving five points, the second four, and so on. The ten players with the most points advanced to second round of voting, which has determined the three finalists named today.

The winner will be announced on August 25, the day of the draw for the Champions League group stage.
