3 Fat-Burning Exercises You Can Do at Home

There are so many excuses to make for not going to the gym: You’re too tired, it’s too far, or you just don’t have the time. Among the more reasonable excuses though is that a gym membership may be too expensive. If that’s the case, working out at home is a great option. “In today’s world, the reality of it is people don’t have time to go to a facility every day anyway,” says Kevin Steele, PhD, exercise physiologist and vice president of 24 Hour Fitness Centers to WebMD. “And consistency is key.”

Steele stresses that 24 Hour Fitness encourages its clientele to exercise at home, just as much as at the gym. “The key thing is that you do something, somewhere, sometime,” he says. Plus, it’s practically free to design an effective workout for yourself at home. According to Steele, your at-home workouts need only include the following key components: A warm-up, a cardiovascular (aerobic) portion, resistance (strength-building) exercises, flexibility moves, and finally a cool-down. Well ladies, now that you’re out of excuses — it’s time to get a great workout done in the comfort of your own home. Here are three of the best exercises you can do without leaving your house.

1. Cardio Routine

This exercise, courtesy of POPSUGAR’s YouTube fitness channel, completely debunks the no-excuse-not-to-exercise shtick. If you have 10 minutes, you can squeeze this routine into your busy life. This 10-minute “calorie-scorching” routine lead by fitness host, Anna Renderer, requires a yoga mat, you, and not much else. With a timer on the side of the screen counting down your routine, you’ll perform moves such as a squat and punch, jumping, as well as the childhood throwback, hop scotch. Let’s just say if you’re not feeling the burn during the workout, you’re definitely not working hard enough.

2. Jillian Michaels Ab Routine

Fitness guru Jillian Michaels knows a thing or two about fitness. Let’s just say Jillian Michael’s abs don’t lie. Go ahead and grab your yoga mat and a free weight and get ready for Michael’s 6 Week Six-Pack Abs Workout- Level 1 (with more levels to follow). Expect circuits and little sympathy.

The 6 Week Six-Pack Abs Workout-Level 1, a 35 minute workout from Michaels’ “6 Week Six-Pack” fitness will blast away abdominal fat, thanks to a great combination of “core-focused cardio circuits and ab-toning exercises that target multiple muscle groups simultaneously to boost the metabolism, slim the waistline, and chisel rock-hard abs.” Michaels’ workout will take you through a total body warm-up, followed by two complete core-strengthening cardio circuits that cover every area of your abdominal muscles, finishing up with a full-body stretch. The workout is great for all skill levels, but if you’re more of a beginner, feel free to modify by removing the weights from the equation.

3. XHIT Daily

If you’re looking for a serious, concentrated workout, then this is for you. From a tutorial on Jennifer Lawrence’s legs to toned arms, this is all achievable in your own home. The XHIT Daily YouTube channel boasts daily workouts with a very high level of energy. There are a variety of workouts on the site, including full-body workouts five days a week, that build strength and flexibility.

In the video above, trainer Rebecca Louise takes you through a series of back exercises that you can easily do on a yoga mat anywhere in your home.
